2020 THRILLER AWARDS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What is the deadline for submissions to the 2020 Thriller Awards? Are there any exceptions?

A. The deadline to submit a novel or short story to the 2020 Thriller Awards is November 1, 2019.

Absent extraordinary circumstances, there are no exceptions to the deadline.  If you have questions please contact the VP of Awards at Anthony@anthonyfranzebooks.com.

Q. Does the author have to be a member of ITW for a novel or short story to be eligible for the 2020 Thriller Awards?

A. No. A novel or short story can be eligible for an award if either (a) the author is an ITW Active member or (b) the novel or short story is published by an ITW-recognized publisher.

The list of ITW Active members is here.

The list and information on ITW-recognized publishers is here.

If the author is not an Active member and the publisher is not on the ITW-recognized publishers list, it is not too late to join ITW or seek recognition. Information on membership is here.

Q. What if the publisher is not on the ITW-approved publisher list?

A. If the publisher is not an ITW-recognized publisher, the work is eligible only if the author is an Active member of ITW.  The list of Active ITW members is here.

Sometimes a publisher is not an ITW-recognized publisher, but is an imprint of an ITW-recognized publisher.  ITW requires both the parent and imprint companies to be recognized, but has a streamlined process for imprints to apply for recognition available here.

Q. What is the eligibility period for the 2020 Thriller Awards? Are only books and stories published in 2019 eligible?

A. Eligible works must have been first published between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019.

Q. The author’s book was originally self-published before the eligibility period, and later released during the eligibility period by an ITW-recognized publisher. Is it eligible for a 2020 Thriller Award?

A. We’re sorry—the work is ineligible. Any work published in any form in the English language before the eligibility period is ineligible.

Q. The novel or story was published outside the U.S. outside the eligibility period, but released in the U.S. during the eligibility period. Is it eligible for a 2020 Thriller Award?

A. The relevant date for eligibility is when the novel or story was first published in the English language. For instance, if a novel was published in the UK in the English language before the eligibility period, but later released in the United States during the eligibility period, it is not eligible for a 2020 Thriller Award.

Q. What if the work was published in different formats within the United States and outside the United States–for instance, published only in paperback outside the United States, but in hardcover in the United States? Should I submit for the paperback or hardcover category?

A. In some countries publishers do not publish books in hardcover, so in that instance, if the work is published in hardcover in the United States it should be submitted to the Best Hardcover category. Given the myriad of differences in publishing in different countries, for other similar category issues please contact Anthony@anthonyfranzebooks.com to discuss the unique status of your submission.

Q. The author’s E-Book was released during the eligibility period, but previously had been released in other formats. Is it still eligible for Best E-Book Original?

A. We’re sorry—the work is ineligible.  E-Books that have been previously published in any format are ineligible.

Q. The author published a first novel from a traditional publisher during the eligibility period, but years ago self-published a novel.  Is the novel still eligible for the Best First Novel?

A. We’re sorry—the work is ineligible for the Best First Novel category.  Any author who has previously published a novel in any format is ineligible to submit work for Best First Novel.  The work may be eligible for another category.

Q. Can a novel or story be submitted to more than one category?

A. No.  Works may be submitted to only one category.  Hardcover novels must be entered in the Best Hardcover Novel category (except for First Novels).  Paperback Originals must be entered in the Best Paperback Original category (except for First Novels.)  All First Novels must be entered in the Best First Novel category (except for YA submissions which must be submitted to the YA category.)  Any author who has previously published a novel in any format is ineligible to submit work for Best First Novel. E-books sold principally in e-book format with only incidental print copies available (such as POD) and that are not distributed in brick-and-mortar stores are eligible for the E-Book Original category.  If you have questions about the appropriate category for your submission please contact Anthony@anthonyfranzebooks.com.

Q. The author’s book is published both in hardcover and paperback format. Can it be submitted in the Best Paperback Original category?

A. Generally, the novel should be submitted to the Best Hardcover Novel category, though exceptions have been made if the hardcover release is limited (a limited hardcover run for only libraries, for instance). If you have questions or think there are special circumstances that warrant the work being submitted to the Best Paperback Original category, please contact the VP of Awards at Anthony@anthonyfranzebooks.com.

Q. The author’s first novel is a young adult thriller. Should it be submitted to the Best First Novel or Young Adult category?

A. All young adult novels, including first novels, should be submitted to the Best Young Adult category.

Q. The novel is an E-Book original title but available in other formats. Should the work be submitted to Best E-Book Original or another category?

A. The E-Book category is intended for works marketed principally in E-Book format with only incidental print copies (such as POD) that are not distributed in brick-and-mortar stores.  All other works should be submitted to the appropriate print category.  If you have questions, please contact the VP of Awards at Anthony@anthonyfranzebooks.com.

Q. For short story submissions, is a story eligible if it was part of an anthology?

A. Yes, short stories are eligible if they were part of a larger anthology so long as they satisfy all other eligibility requirements.

Q. If the author or publisher does not have a NetGalley account, may they submit in other formats?

A. Yes.  The submission form has instructions for submitting the work in NetGalley or .PDF format.  No other formats, including hardcopies, are eligible.

Q. What if the author or publisher has a NetGalley account but is unable (because of space limitations or other reasons) to make the book’s Archive Date available until March 31, 2020?

A. If the submitter is unable to make the NetGalley copy available until March 31, 2020 (i.e., setting the Archive Date until 3/31/20) the work should be submitted in .PDF format. The judges are reviewing hundreds of submissions and it is inconvenient when they seek to read a book and it is unavailable because the NetGalley access has expired.  If a judge seeks to access a NetGalley title and it is unavailable because the Archive Date was not set to March 31, 2020, the work will be disqualified from consideration for a Thriller Award.

Q. I’m having trouble submitting through NetGalley.

A. The submission form provides instructions for submitting a NetGalley copy.  If you have further questions please contact the VP of Awards at Anthony@anthonyfranzebooks.com.

Q. The PDF I am submitting will not work on the submission form.

A. Occasionally a PDF size exceeds the capacity of our system. Please contact the VP of Awards at Anthony@anthonyfranzebooks.com and we will find an alternative method for submission.

Q. The submission form is not working for me. What do I do?

A. Often, changing browsers will resolve a problem, but please contact the VP of Awards at Anthony@anthonyfranzebooks.com if that does not resolve the issue.

Q. I’m an author and I’m not sure if my publisher already submitted my book for the 2020 Thriller Awards. What can I do to avoid a duplicate submission?

A. Please contact deborah.carpenter@thrillerwriters.org who can verify if a novel or short story has been submitted to the 2020 Thriller Awards.

Q. When will the finalists be announced?

A. ITW will announce the finalists for the 2020 Thriller Awards in April 2020.

Q. When will the winners be announced?

A. ITW will announce the winners on July 11, 2020 at the International Thriller Writers’ gala banquet held in New York City.
